VW Golf GTI & Golf R platform build guide · Mk6 · Mk7 · Mk8 · 2010–2026

The Golf GTI and Golf R build guide. Staged the right way.

Three generations of the same recipe: a 2.0T EA888 that responds to everything you bolt to it, a chassis set up from the factory for comfort first, and an aftermarket deeper than almost any car we work on. Whether you have a Mk6 GTI, a Mk7 GTI or Golf R, or the current Mk8, this is our opinionated stage 1, 2 and 3 parts list: real parts we stock, chosen to work together, tuned, installed and aligned in-house in Coral Springs.

Stage 1 · GTI & Golf R stage 1 parts list

The daily-plus foundation.

Stage 1 on an EA888 Golf is the bolt-ons that work on the stock calibration and carry straight into stage 2: an intake that lets you hear the turbo spool, a cat-back that gives the 2.0T a voice without droning on I-95, and sport springs that close the fender gap while keeping DCC alive on cars that have it. Every part here stays on the car under a later tune instead of getting thrown away by it.

Stage 2 · GTI & Golf R power parts list

The tune, and the hardware that lets it work.

A real EA888 stage 2 is an ECU calibration plus the hardware that lets it hold power in Florida heat: a front-mount intercooler so the tune isn’t pulling timing by the third pull, a diverter valve that doesn’t leak boost, a turbo inlet and muffler delete so the turbo breathes, and on DSG cars a bigger cooler and a TCU calibration so the gearbox survives the torque. Manual cars get a clutch that matches. Downpipes for the GTI and Golf R aren’t in our online catalog yet; we source and install them, and the Unitronic or COBB calibration is loaded in-house, so tell us the car and we’ll quote the complete package.

Stage 3 · track prep parts list

Track prep: control before more power.

A tuned Golf is quick down any straight. What decides your track day is whether it turns in on lap eight the way it did on lap one, with all that weight over the front axle and Florida heat in the brakes. Our stage 3 list is coilovers that keep DCC alive, sway bars that dial out the push a front-heavy Golf ships with, a real track pad for the Mk7 and a proper big brake kit for the Mk8 R. Limited-slip differentials for the GTI aren’t in our online catalog; we source and install them, so tell us the car and we’ll quote it with the rest.

Show & stance

Fitment that photographs as well as it drives.

Every Golf on this page runs 5x112 with a 57.1mm bore, the best-supported fitment in the aftermarket, which opens the door to BBS, RAYS, Rotiform and the rest of the premium catalog in the 18in and 19in sizes the car wears best. We spec wheels, tires, drop and alignment as one package, mounted on scratch-free equipment and Road Force balanced in-house, with spacers and offset chosen so the arches fill without rubbing under compression.

  • Wheel and tire packages spec’d for 5x112 Golf fitments
  • Sport springs or coilovers matched to the wheel setup, DCC kept working
  • Hunter Road Force balancing and expert alignment
  • H&R Trak+ spacers and TPMS sensors in stock, cloned to your car

Installed in-house

Parts are half the build. Installation is the other half.

Everything on this page can be installed, tuned, set up and aligned in our own shop. Coilovers go in with the ride height corner-weighted and DCC either kept alive with the right dampers or bypassed cleanly so there are no warning lights, ECU and TCU calibration is loaded in-house as a Unitronic and COBB dealer, and every suspension change ends on our Hunter alignment system so the car drives the way the parts list promised instead of tramlining under power.

  • Lift work, brake, clutch and suspension installs done in-house
  • Unitronic and COBB ECU and DSG calibration flashed in the shop
  • DCC-aware setups with no warning lights
  • Hunter alignment with corner weighting for lowered and coilover cars

Sourcing the parts the catalog doesn’t show

Downpipes, limited-slip differentials and the ECU and TCU calibration that makes stage 2 work are things we source and install for GTI and Golf R customers directly rather than list online. Tuning is done in-house as a Unitronic and COBB authorized dealer; our services page has the details. If your plan needs any of it, send the car details below and we’ll quote the complete package with installation.

GTI & Golf R questions

Before you order parts.

Will lowering springs or coilovers break DCC?

Not if they are chosen for it. The springs and coilovers on this page are the DCC-compatible versions, and for cars where a conventional coilover replaces the adaptive dampers we fit an electronic bypass module so there are no warning lights. Tell us whether your car has DCC and we’ll map the list to it.

Do the GTI and Golf R share parts?

Within a generation, a lot. The Mk7 GTI and Golf R share intakes, intercoolers, most pads and the Bilstein B16 on this page, but springs, sway bars and exhausts are usually car-specific and the Golf R’s all-wheel drive changes the driveline parts entirely. Across generations very little carries over. Our lists call out which cars each part fits; send us your exact car and we’ll confirm before anything is ordered.

Do I need a tune for stage 1?

No. Our GTI and Golf R stage 1 list is intake, cat-back and springs — all of it works on the stock calibration. When you are ready for stage 2, the Unitronic or COBB calibration is loaded in-house and the stage 1 parts stay on the car.

What about downpipes, DSG tunes and a limited-slip diff?

We install all of it, but downpipes and limited-slip differentials for the Golf aren’t listed in our online catalog. They are shop-quoted parts, and the ECU and TCU calibration that goes with them is done in-house as a Unitronic and COBB dealer: send the car details and we’ll price the complete package with installation.

Can you install and align everything here?

Yes. Every part on this page can be installed in our Coral Springs shop, and suspension work is finished on our Hunter alignment system with corner weighting when the car calls for it. We serve enthusiasts across South Florida, from Boca Raton and Parkland to Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

Golf parts

Which Golf are you building?

Our catalog lists GTI and Golf R fitment by model year, so 2.0T parts for both cars often appear together for your generation — check each product’s fitment notes for GTI-only or Golf R-only pieces, and for DCC and manual-versus-DSG variants. Set your exact year in the catalog to narrow further.
